Siri Paye: A glimpse of paradise

By Fatima Shaheen Niazi

People from all over Pakistan often head to Naran and Kaghan since they are among the most popular travel spots in the country. But have you ever been to Siri Paye? Situated in the Kaghan Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Siri Paye is often skipped by travellers who think Naran and Hunza have better sights to offer. However, from my personal experience, I can guarantee Siri Paye is one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan and if you haven’t visited it yet, you must travel there now.

I was on my way to Hunza with a few friends when someone I met on the way suggested we stop by Shogran and Siri Paye. Everyone in the group disagreed to make the stop and said, “once you see Hunza, you would not want to see anything else.”

Oh, how wrong they were! There is no comparison between the two since Hunza is the land of magnificent mountains, whereas Siri Paye is a serene and glorious meadow. Luckily, I was able to convince my friends to make this stop and it’s a decision that none of us regret.

Situated at a height of almost 9,498 feet, Siri Paye meadows is an unforgettable sight because the view from there includes a glimpse of Makra Peak, Malika Parbat, and the mountains of Kashmir. Reaching there however, is not a piece of cake and many people often make the strenuous journey after staying the night at Shogran. We too, did the same and proceeded to Siri Paye after staying at the beautiful yet super crowded Shorgran.

Though Siri Paye is just 6 kilometres away from Shogran, th e journey is extremely tough and requires one to rent a jeep. Since we were already travelling in a four-wheel drive, we managed to avoid the rental process and visited the striking meadow in our own transport. But oh, what a bumpy ride it was and I was glad I had decided to pop an anti-nausea pill right before sitting in the vehicle.

When we finally reached Siri Paye, the uncomfortable ride was instantly forgotten as soon as we set our eyes upon the endless green land. If this wasn’t enough to convince you, imagine a lake within this scenery. Yes, there is a Siri Paye lake too and it was surrounded by goats and cows just casually resting and munching on the bright green grass. What a relaxing sight it was!

So what does one do when they reach Siri Paye? The answer is nothing. You just relax ad absorb the exquisiteness mother nature has gifted to you. We kept walking in the field for hours and we still couldn’t get enough of the mesmerising beauty. Everywhere we looked, there were mountains, trees, flowers, and animals. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? We definitely thought so.

Are you ready to check the place out yourself now? Well, here are some travel tips if I managed to convince you:

  • Do not travel to Siri Paye during severe weather conditions since the road is dangerous.
  • Be prepared to walk a lot and make sure to wear comfy shoes.
  • Carry an inhaler if you have breathing problems.
  • Apply sunblock.
  • Carry a small water bottle.
  • Take some snacks so you can have a mini picnic next to the lake.
