10 healthy road trip snacks for those on a diet

Since areas like Gorakh, Kashmir and Hunza don’t have airports, the only way to reach them is through hours of road travel. Unfortunately, even a weekend trip to Balochistan from Karachi takes a few hours. The enemy for anyone on a diet during these road trips are junk snacks and sugar-filled goodies. Hence, many a times, people come back from a holiday with a few extra pounds on their hips.

Not only does this ruin months of effort put into a diet regime, the idea of gaining weight might make you want to avoid a road trip altogether. Don’t worry, we got you! Here’s a list of snacks you that will fill you up and keep you healthy at the same time. Most of these goodies are cheap and can be prepared easily at home. Now all you have to do is avoid the Karahis and Qormas you might encounter at dhabas on the way to your destination

1. Fruits

Fruits are filling and provide the energy needed during a long strenuous trip. The best go-to fruits during any trip are apples and bananas since they are available all year round and are flooded with just the right vitamins. Since each banana and apple contains approximately 100 calories, too much of these fruits may make you bloaty.

2. Protein bars

Often replaced with meals, protein bars are the perfect option for a road trip. They fill you up instantly and provide the body with at least 250 plus calories. Protein bars also contain the required amount of protein and carbs needed by anyone on a healthy diet.

Tip: Research on the protein bar brand before purchasing it. Some bars are loaded with sugar and might not be as healthy as they appear.

3. Oatmeal

While there are many oatmeal bars available in the market, you also have the option of preparing oats at home and packing it up for the trip. This snack can be quite useful for shorter routes such as trips from Islamabad to Kashmir or from Karachi to Gorakh.

4. Popcorn

Popcorn is not only lip-smacking but is also a great source of fiber and complex carbs. All you have to do is steer clear of chemical filled microwave popcorns available at supermarkets. Instead, purchase popcorn from a natural foods store as the only ingredients in them are corn, salt, and oil.

5. Hard boiled eggs

We admit this is not the most delicious snack option, but eggs are filling and provide ample protein. They are easy to prepare, easy to store, easy to eat and cost barely anything. You can also opt to make boiled eggs sandwiches in brown bread if just the eggs aren’t enough of a meal.

6. Peanut butter sandwich

This is amongst the most filling options in the list and can easily be replaced by the unhealthy parathas travellers in Pakistan often eat during pit stops at tea dhabas. Since one tablespoon of peanut butter and one slice of bran bread amounts to 100 calories each, try to keep track of the number of sandwiches you consume each day.

Tip: Avoid purchasing processed peanut butter. Instead, go for organic options available in cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Don’t know where to look for healthy options? Well, google is your best friend.

7. Carrots

Carrots have fiber and other great nutritional value. But one of the reasons we suggest this as a road trip snack is because while travelling, you might find yourself wanting to eat simply because you’re bored. Instead of filling that boredom with unhealthy snacks, munch on some carrots.

8. Dry fruits

Dry fruits like almonds, peanuts, walnuts and pistachios are packed with nutrition and healthy fats. Dry fruits are easy to carry, don’t spoil no matter what the weather is, and tend to keep the stomach full for a long time.

9. Dark chocolate

Yes, you read that right. You can have chocolate while on vacation even if you are dieting. We promise it won’t lead to extra pounds as long as you buy a good brand of dark chocolate with zero sugar. Also, don’t gulp down the entire bar in one sitting.

10. Banana bread

Why eat cake when you can have banana bread? Perfect for a road trip, banana bread is a healthy substitute for cakes and biscuits. Just make sure the bread you opt for does not include processed sugar.
